In this day and age, our lives are fast paced and generally hectic. It is common to find ourselves living on the opposite end of the country, far removed from most of our family. We have fine phone service and e-mail to keep in touch, but it simply not the same as meeting family members in person for a reunion. Traditionally family reunions were held once a year and the whole family was present. Through these family gatherings children met cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents and came to know them well. Children understood the dynamics of family through reunions. Today with families spread at great distances and busy lifestyles, family reunions often are put off until they never happen and many family members have never met. Once you have decided to host a family reunion, plan your reunion so that all age groups will be entertained and feel welcome. Decorations are available in many themes or types to help you set a tone for your party.

If you are having a summer time reunion in your backyard, why not decorate with a Hawaiian luau theme? Complete with grass skirts, leis and ukulele music, a luau themed reunion would be fun for all your guests. Pineapple, coconut and palm tree light sets are very affordable for $7-$10. What a fun way to provide lighting as the reunion continues into the evening. Colorful paper hanging lanterns for $2-$3 provide color and an exotic feel to the setting. To round out your luau presentation use centerpieces, plates, napkins, beverage cups and food trays with Hawaiian images readily available at minimal expense. The great variety of themed decorations available makes choosing difficult. If the guests mainly grew up in the 50’s why not have a retro reunion with 50’s music (CD $11-$22), banners with muscle car images, a life size Elvis or Marilyn Monroe stand up (about $34) and Rock n’ Roll Forever favors on the table? Juke box plates, napkins, beverage cups and table covers complete the 50’s experience for those who were not fortunate enough to live it.

Who can resist disco music? A Disco themed reunion is sure to be a hit with disco music ($14-$25) , glow stick lighting (less than $1 each) and the ever popular disco balls ($3) hanging over head. Coordinated paper plates, cups, napkins and table cover complete the scene. Children are sure to be totally entertained watching adults do disco. Before long they will be joining in the dance fever.
